I am a composer who is curious: curious about how we construct meaning, curious about how we convey intent. I compose music that reinterprets conventional idioms to highlight the ways in which we make meaning out of what we hear. How do we grasp structure? How do we interpret change? By engaging with the ideas of repetition and memorability, I aim to construct convincing narratives that are aurally apparent to the listener. How do we formulate the future? How do we engineer expectations? My music wrestles with these issues in the context of dramatic architecture, where basic elements – such as rhythm, pitch, and timbre – coalesce to create music that moves. In physics, motion occurs in time and space. In music, motion creates time and space: rhythm demarcates time while pitch and timbre flesh out space. While the deployment of these elements determines the architecture of the music, the drama arises from the movement through it. The patterns of this movement, in turn, create expectations, and it is from their resolutions that meaning is born. In my compositions, I am curious about all of these layers and relish in the harmony which comes from combining them.
